Analysis of the Use of the Same Frequent Verb Collocations in Three Different Corpora

Abstract

The present study analyzes the use of the frequent verb collocations in the KorSzak tanulói korpusz (KorSzak learner corpus) and compares them with the frequent verb collocations of the MagyarOK nyílt pedagógiai korpusz (MagyarOK open pedagogical corpus), and the huTenTen12 native language corpus. It investigates whether the foreign language learners use in their written performances the same verb collocations as native speakers, whether they use the right collocations, whether they overuse or underuse them. The study reveals and compares the lexicogrammatical characteristics of the frequent verbs in the above-mentioned corpora and describes the formal and contentual characteristics of these results.

Zsófia Antal, International Studies Center, University of Pécs Medical School

Zsófia Antal (<antal.zsofia@pte.hu>) graduated from the University of Pécs with a degree in Hungarian Language and Literature, and a degree in Teacher of Hungarian as a Foreign Language. In addition to her Hungarian studies, she completed a specialization in Finno-Ugric studies. She taught Hungarian language and culture as a visiting lecturer at the St. Cyril and St. Methodius University of Veliko Tarnovo, Bulgaria for four years, and studied the attitudinal and motivational factors behind the choice of the Hungarian language among university students. Since 2005, she has been a staff member of the International Studies Centre (ISC) of the University of Pécs, where she is currently a teacher of Hungarian as a foreign language and the coordinator of the Hungarian program. Her tasks include the continuous development and renewal of ISC’s programs. She is the secretary of the KorSzak Working Group for Corpus Linguistics and Didactics and a member of the working group on learner corpus.
