Abstract

The Chronicon Salernitanum narrates how some relatives of the Lombard prince of Benevento Grimoald storesayz (806-817) had cut off the tail of the horse of their rival Dauferius as a deliberate act of insult to his honor, in retaliation for a previous gesture considered infamous towards them, carried out by a servant of Dauferius himself. Starting from this episode, which corresponds to a rule of the Edict of king Rothari, the paper tries to reconstruct, through the examination of legal and literary sources, the concept of honor typical of Lombard culture and society, its specific perception, representation and legal protection.
