The following articles examine the various aspects of the agrarian contracts in the different parts of Italy (Piacenza, Lucca, and Salerno): the appearance and functions of this type of documents, the social and economic conditions of the lease-holding tenants, the use of written words by landlords, as well as to the eventual connections between the evolution of documentary form and the transformation of social and economic structures. Through such examination, these area studies aim to renovate our understanding of the characteristics, limits and potential of the agrarian contracts as the source of the investigation of rural societies and economy in early Medieval Italy.
