Abstract

This contribution aims at reconstructing the story of the Pietraviva family from 1300 to 1550. Starting from Chieri, the members of this merchant family enjoyed a significant upward social mobility, well before some of them moved to Lyon in the second half of the 15th century. Through the analysis of fiscal, patrimonial and notarial documents from both sides of the Alps it becomes clear that their involvement in the management of fiscal resources had a crucial role in the construction of their social stance in Chieri, in the accumulation of economic capital in Savona and in their stabilisation strategies north of the Alps. In the case of the Pietraviva, later  Pierrevive in France, investment in fiscal systems, especially indirect taxation, was tied to social and geographic mobility.
