Abstract

The article focuses on the the cives malenutriti, or citizens of Bologna living in the countryside, during the 14th century. In spite of their name, whose etymology is probably to be sought in the figurative rather than literal meanings of the verb nutrire, they constituted a village bourgeoisie of landowners and artisans, probably growing demographically and economically, whose fiscal status was repeatedly renegotiated as city governments and military spending changed. With the reforms of 1393-1395 they were significantly reduced in number and united with the nobiles to form a single fiscal category of citizens privileged in the contado.
