Title: Cuba in the 21st Century: Language, Literature, and Philosophy
Description: In a time of profound economic, political, and cultural transformations, Cuba continues to stand out as a fascinating and prolific intellectual laboratory in the contemporary landscape. In recent decades, domestic economic reforms and the complex dialogue with the diaspora of its people have reshaped the island's sociocultural context, generating areas of tension but also extraordinary creative opportunities. This has given rise to an original and powerful vision capable of representing not only Cuba but also the broader world of today.
With a long tradition of cultural excellence, the Caribbean island now faces unprecedented challenges, prompting a rethinking of its identity in an increasingly interconnected context. Globalization has redrawn the boundaries of Cuban culture, enriching it with external influences while simultaneously confronting it with the need to preserve its specificity. This is a quintessential issue of the 21st century but also recalls reflections rooted in the distant past, shaped by Cuba’s generative-oppressive relationship with the West—a hallmark of both Cuba and Latin America since European conquest.
This ever-evolving scenario has inspired new generations of intellectuals to grapple with critical themes of our time: the meaning of identity in a globalized world, the dynamics of migration, historical memory as a key to understanding the present, and the multifaceted nature of social articulation. These themes emerge powerfully in the creative and intellectual work of Cuban authors and thinkers, who, through a plurality of languages and perspectives, offer a distinctive narrative of their experience, opening it to dialogue with the global context.
The upcoming issue of Pagine Inattuali seeks to critically and interdisciplinarily engage with these ideas, contributing in its own small way to the cultural debate surrounding 21st-century Cuba.
