Abstract

The essay analyzes the contribution offered by the comedians of Commedia dell’Arte to the reflection produced on comic theatre all along the seventeenth century. In particular, it analyzes the functions performed by the scenic device of “lazzo” in relation to the overall economy of the comic play.

Author Biography

Silvia Carandini, Sapienza University of Rome

Silvia Carandini has been full professor at the Faculty of Humanities of the Sapienza University of Rome, where she taught History of Theater and Performing Arts. The main area of ​​his research is the Baroque era, from festive apparatuses (L’effimero barocco. Strutture della festa nel Seicento, Bulzoni 1977-1978, together with M. Fagiolo Dell'Arco), to the different genres of entertainment in Italy (Teatro e spettacolo nel Seicento, Laterza 1990), to the production of a single author (Don Giovanni o l’estrema avventura del teatro. Il nuovo risarcito Convitato di pietra, di G.B. Andreini, Bulzoni 2003, together with L. Mariti). Other studies have concerned the French theater between the 19th and 20th centuries (La melagrana spaccata. L’arte del teatro in Francia dal naturalismo alle avanguardie storiche, Valerio Levi 1988), the relationship between dance and theater in the 20th century (La generazione danzante. L’arte del movimento in Europa nel primo Novecento, Di Giacomo 1977, Di Giacomo 1977, together with E. Vaccarino).
