Abstract

Although adopting different strategies, Martin Crimp and Simon Stephens avoid the truthfulness of docudrama, preferring a more or less allusive re-narration of events. To dramatise the dialogue between the personal and public dimension of a fact, both playwrights draw upon a hypotext, showing how the re-writing of an event is grafted upon a source, thus becoming a palinsest. However, the two plays differ in many ways. First of all, the global consequences of terrorism and the transnational echoes of Cruel and Tender contrast with the staging of Englishness in Pornography.
