Abstract

The contribution addresses the relationship between written and archaeological sources in light of Chris Wickham’s book, The Donkey and the Boat. Through examining several Italian case studies, interpretative issues related to archaeological data, their use, and the resulting impact on historical interpretation are highlighted.
